Not familliar with all the poker lingo? Here's a list of the more common poker terms you may hear next time you're on the tables.
3rd Street (Third Street)
In a Seven Card Stud game, this is the first betting round after the first three cards are dealt.
4th Street (Fourth Street)
The fourth card dealt after the initial betting round (3rd Street).
5th Street (Fifth Street)
Also known as the "river card" (final) card in 5 card games. In 7 card games the third round of betting.
Sixth Street
In Seven-card Stud games (regular or Hi/Lo), this is the fourth "up" card dealt to the player and the 4th round of betting.
Seventh Street
In Seven-card Stud games (regular or Hi/Lo), this is the final card dealt and final round of betting.
Ante
The money players put in the pot before the hand is begun.
Bet
To place chips into the pot.
Blind
A required ante made by a player on the table, either sitting left of the dealer or 2 spots left of the dealer (there is both a small and big blind.)
Small Blind
The required ante made by the person immediately to the left of the dealer prior to the cards being dealt.
Big Blind
The required ante made by the player sitting to the second left of the dealer, before any cards are dealt.
Boardcards
The cards that are dealt face up in a poker game for all players to see.
Call
When a player chooses to match the previous bet without raising additional money.
Check
When it's a player's turn to act and there has been no bets to call, a 'check' signifies the player does not wish to make a bet.
Community Cards
Cards that are face up and used by all players in a hand.
Door Card
This is the first card dealt face up to a player's hand in Stud games (5 or 7 card).
Down Card
Hole cards. Cards that are dealt face down as to not be seen by other players.
Flop
In Texas Hold'em and Omaha games, the first three community cards that are dealt face up in the center of the table all at one time.
Fold
To drop out of a hand and not contribute additional money to the pot.
Hand
A players best
five cards. In 7 card games a hand is still made up of each players best 5 cards. In a Hi/Lo game, the low hand wins half the pot - in which case a hand may
be made up of a players 'worst' 5 cards.
Hole Cards
These are the 'Down Cards' dealt to players.
Pocket
A term referring to all of a players hole/down cards.
Pot
All the money/chips in the center of a table that players contribute to with raises and ante, and try to win with a best hand.
Raise
To increase a bet made by a player earlier in a betting round.
Rake
A small percentage of chips taken from the pot by the poker room.
River Card
This is the last card dealt in a game. In Hold'em and Omaha, it is also known as 5th street. In Stud games, it is also known as 7th street.
Showdown
At the end of the final betting round when all remaining players turn their cards face up to see who has won the pot it is referred to as a 'showdown'.
Turn
In flop games such as Ohmaha and Hold'em this is the fourth card dealt and the third round of betting.
Up Card
A card that is dealt face up for all players to see.
